  • The ingenious aspect of the creation of Yang style Tai Chi from Lu’Chan is the idea that the whole form is a combative-reaction from position to position through out the whole form. If you read Yang Cheng’Fu’s, The Essence and Applications of Tai Chi Chuan, you will come in contact with a deeper reality of this fact. The deeper secrets that I hope to divulge in this book, Yang Tai Chi Boxing Strategies, pertain to the Eight Gates and Five Steps of the Yang Family transmissions in addition to understanding the mathematic-geometrical components of the Circle and Square in relation to the fight cadence and strategies founded by Yang Lu’Chan.

  • Martial Arts on a whole is live and well in Tunis, from what I have been able to observe since relocating here two years ago. Taekwondo and Aikido are the most prominent styles practiced here; as well as the rise of Judo and Jujitsu in the wake of the new MMA craze. Chinese Martial Arts is making a surge of late with Sifu's like Ariel Betti and Mohammad Ghariani teaching Wushu and Tai Chi Chuan to large classes in the Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa, and surrounding Tunis area. Mohammad is connected to the Plum Blossom school of Kung fu, and Ariel teaches the more traditional Shaolin techniques; as well as Golden Dragon Southern Style. The Martial environment here is very rich with a long list of Sifu's who teach Japanese style's, as well as a multiplicity of Western Boxing and Wrestling instructors.

  • Old experts also thought Jujitsu was unimportant, until the Gracie’s swept the through MMA’s circuits snatching up every prize purse to be had. Now Jujitsu is a prerequisite if anyone wishes to compete with the big boys. The question has been begged to be answered, ‘’What does Internal Martial Arts offer?’’ No one can argue that ring fighting has become as predictable as the opening moves in a chess match. I would answer the question put forth by saying, ‘’Internal Martial Arts offers Balance, Focus, and Adaptability.’’

  • When using ‘contraction’ against bodily manipulation (grapplers), we should use it on the ‘exhalation.’ The reason is that ‘sinking’ is best accomplished during this breath cycle (as explained in the example of the pool.) Many Kung Fu schools such as Shaolin, and Hung Gar schools which broke off from Shaolin, use the Iron Wire method of practicing ‘muscle contractions’ for this very reason. The ‘Iron Wire’ skills used to be protected knowledge amongst underground Chinese Societies. The art-form also spread to Japan and can be found in many advanced levels of various Karate schools; and is best shown in the movie, ‘Street Fighter,’ featuring ‘Sonny Chiba.’

  • Slap boxing was something that all kids did while I was growing up in Military Schools, but I soon gravitated towards Wing Chun and the methods espoused by Bruce Lee. Then one day I purchased a book by Robert W. Smith called, Chinese Boxing. It was the first time in my life that I had been introduced to the ideas of Chinese Internal Martial Arts. Soon afterwards, I bought a few of Chen Manching’s books, and started to experiment with push hands theories with friends and co-workers. At the time, I couldn’t find any experienced teachers in my area, so I worked hard to perfect the forms and methods laid out by Chen Manching and Yang Jun.

  • The more scientific Occident, on the other hand, champions Vitamin-C and green leafy vegetables; while those inconspicuous hermits from the Orient suggested things such as: Wolf berries, Ginseng, herbs, seeds, roots, vegetables, and various fruits. Many Taoist practiced ‘Bigu’ (refraining from the consumption of grains) as the foundation to building a strong efficient digestive system, which shouldn’t be over taxed by compacting glutinous bowel movements.

  • The Yang family first became involved in the study of t'ai chi ch'uan (taijiquan) in the early 19th century. The founder of the Yang-style was Yang Lu-ch'an (楊露禪), aka Yang Fu-k'ui (楊福魁, 1799–1872), who studied under Ch'en Chang-hsing starting in 1820. Yang became a teacher in his own right, and his subsequent expression of t'ai chi ch'uan became known as the Yang-style, and directly led to the development of other three major styles of t'ai chi ch'uan (see below). Yang Lu-ch'an (and some would say the art of t'ai chi ch'uan, in general) came to prominence as a result of his being hired by the Chinese Imperial family to teach t'ai chi ch'uan to the elite Palace Battalion of the Imperial Guardsin 1850, a position he held until his death.

  • Training for over sixteen years in the domain of Martial Arts and traveling the world; frequenting many advanced Martial Arts classes & circles--I dare say Sifu Ariel's professionalism is top notch, and his expertise is second to none in the domain of self defense and martial discipline. His synergy of skill, fortitude, and compassion, during his workshops, is a rare combination of maturity which makes his events fun, and above all, conducive to learning and actually being able to take something away from the experience. I challenge all Martial Artists of Tunisia to come out to an event this year, make some new friends, and sharpen your abilities. All levels and grades of Martial artists are welcome to come and join in on the fun; even if you are beginner (this is more the reason to come out and enjoy something memorable.) Life is too short, so get off the sofa!
